Slip exposure at loading docks differs from elsewhere on an industrial site in a specific way: the surfaces are the most contaminated on the property, and they are the only place where people routinely work at a height difference. A slip on a yard surface is a fall to the same level; a slip at a dock edge is not.

The dock pit and the interior transition are the two most often missed. Pits are unpleasant to inspect and drain poorly, so contamination and standing liquid accumulate. The transition inside the door falls between exterior and interior cleaning scopes and is frequently in neither.
The Elevation Factor
A dock is the one place on an industrial site where routine work happens at a height difference. The consequence is that the same slip that would be minor on the yard becomes a fall from height at a dock edge, and the controls need to reflect that.
- Open dock edges β positions with no trailer are an open edge, and edge protection or barriers matter most exactly when a position is empty and appears inactive.
- Stairs combine elevation, contamination, and weather. Nosings, handrails, and surface condition on dock stairs warrant inspection at a higher frequency than stairs elsewhere.
- The trailer-to-dock transition introduces a moving surface and a gap, and contamination at that point is particularly consequential.
Wet Weather Amplifies Everything
Rain does not clean a dock apron β it mobilises the contamination already there and spreads it, and it introduces water onto surfaces that already have reduced traction. The combination of wet weather, contaminated dock surfaces, and elevation change is the highest-exposure condition on an industrial site.
Two practical responses. First, treat the pre-wet-season dock clean as a safety measure rather than an appearance one β removing accumulated contamination before it gets mobilised. Second, increase inspection frequency at docks during wet periods, focusing on the apron, stairs, and interior transition.
Cleaning as the Primary Control
Unlike many slip exposures, this one responds directly to cleaning β provided the cleaning actually removes the contamination rather than spreading it. Grease and oil require heat and appropriate chemistry with dwell; pressure alone moves contamination around and polishes the surface, which makes the problem worse.

Surface Treatment Options
Where a dock apron or stair has persistent slip exposure that cleaning frequency does not resolve, surface treatment is worth considering β anti-slip coatings, applied grit systems, or replacement of worn stair nosings. These are specification decisions rather than maintenance ones and warrant input from someone qualified to assess the specific surface.
What maintenance can contribute is the observation: recording which positions or stairs repeatedly present slip conditions turns an anecdote into a case for treatment.

- Dock aprons and stairs β visual check as part of routine rounds, documented monthly.
- Dock pits β inspect monthly; more often where drainage is poor or standing liquid recurs.
- Interior transitions β include explicitly, since they fall between scopes.
- During wet periods β increased frequency on aprons, stairs, and transitions.
- After any release β targeted inspection of the affected position and downgrade of it.
